Executive summary: the Eastern Neighbourhood Region and the EU's energy interests

Since the early 1990s, the EU has actively sought the development of both the oil and gas sectors in former Soviet republics. Energy security, the cornerstone of the EU’s foreign policy became the driving force behind the European Neighbourhood Policy. Investments through the EU’s Neighbourhood Policy Instrument and public banks have supported the development of unsustainable energy systems in most Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries. Like in other countries, the EaP region received more for fossil fuels than renewable sources of energy.

Czech government pushes people to edge in new coal mine expansion

Prague - In a landmark decision today, the Czech Republic reversed a quarter century-old ban that prohibited the expansion of surface mining in an area of Northern Bohemia, allowing excavation in close vicinity of homes of more than 120 000 people.

Ukraine's zombie reactors at the Development Day in Slovakia

On October 14, the World Development Information Day, Bankwatch and our partners People in Peril joined an event in Bratislava of the Slovak Platform of development NGOs with stories, pictures and international cuisine.

Students, journalists and politicians watched our photo-exhibition "Nuclear Ukraine". We explained how "development can go wrong" and why the Ukraine's ageing nuclear reactors require public engagement of citizens in the region.
