Kumtor gold facilities, Kyrgyzstan: Comments on water, environmental and related issues

This report, authored by hydrogeologist and geochemist Dr. Robert Moran, reveals that Canadian company Centerra Gold, owner and operator of the Kumtor gold mine, has been contaminating local waters and glaciers while hiding evidence of such negative impacts from public oversight.

Last fall, Moran was invited by Kyrgyz environmental NGOs to join the Interagency Commission for visiting the mine and conducting an independent technical audit of the site. Nevertheless, finally Moran’s entrance to the mine was refused without explaining its reasoning. He went on to conduct his own informal visit and field measurements and compared his findings with those of the Commission.
