Report from a fact finding mission to ArcelorMittal Temirtau

ArcelorMittal received a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for health and safety improvements in its Kazakh coal mines. While fatal accidents at the mines continue, the company has so far not provided sufficient information to allow the project's assessment. We visited Temirtau to talk with miners directly about the company's health and safety performance.

The toolkit is based on experiences of different Bankwatch campaigners who have witnessed all kinds of problems caused by internationally sponsored projects. The toolkit is meant to support NGOs from the early steps of their engagement with IFI-sponsored projects. It gives hints about how to identify potential gender related problems and shows ways to prepare for the prevention or mitigation of such problems.

The Polnoc power plant in Poland. A plan for the biggest greenfield coal project in Europe.

At a whopping 2000 MW, the planned Polnoc power plant (Elektrownia Polnoc) in northern Poland would be the largest greenfield coal-fired power plant in Europe. Located in the Pomerania region, which until now has had no coal industry and in recent years has witnessed an unprecedented surge in the wind energy projects, the plant would sit perilously close to three Natura 2000 sites and cool itself with waters from the nearby Vistula river.

ArcelorMittal's enormous steel mill in southern Ukraine received a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in 2006 that helped the company increase productivity and expand its market position but didn't do much to address the pollution caused by the mill.

National Ecological Centre of Ukraine (NECU) was one of the first nation-wide non-governmental organisations in the newly independent Ukraine. It has 24 local branches throughout Ukraine. NECU's mission is to work for the creation of a sound environment and to improve the quality of people's lives in Ukraine.

Friends of the Earth-CEPA (Center for Environmental Public Advocacy (FoE-CEPA)) is a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation in Slovakia. The organisation's objectives include promoting environmental, social and economic justice, supporting sustainable regional development and strengthening effective participation of citizens in decision-making processes linked with public interest issues.

Center for Ecology and Sustainable Development

Center for Ecology and Sustainable Development (Centar za ekologiju i održivi razvoj - CEKOR) is an environmental and development organisation. Apart from monitoring international financial institutions' activities in Serbia CEKOR is working on issues in the areas of transport, waste, biodiversity, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and making the city of Subotica sustainable.

CEKOR is an affiliate (pending) member of Bankwatch and is cooperating with us for several years already.

Sakhalin Environmental Watch

Sakhalin Environment Watch (SEW) is an independent, non-partisan, non-government organization whose mission is to protect the natural ecosystems of the Sakhalin region in Russia. SEW's main goals are protecting and defending the environment and nature of the Sakhalin region, conducting public environment control, defending ecological rights and legal interests of citizens.
